Building World Class Bicycling.
Boston Bike Network Plan 2013"Three years ago I declared “The car is no longer king in Boston” ... I’m proud of the 65 miles of bike facilities we have installed in the last three years and of our Silver Bicycle Friendly Community designation.
"This Bike Network Plan will improve the quality of life for every Bostonian and help keep Boston strong by improving our health, our air quality, and reducing congestion on our city streets.
"I know that this Bike Network Plan will help to transform Boston into a world-class bicycling city and make it possible for every Bostonian, young and old, to get out and ride."
—Mayor Thomas M. Menino
Dudley Square Bike Club - story |
Bicycle Club
Now a bicycle club for young people has opened in Dudley Square. The story is on WBUR RaidoBoston (click the image to hear the story). The free club empowers kids to learn mechanics with hands on tear-down and assembly of bicycles.
A powerful way to learn is through hands on experience. Consider the Wright Brothers - from their beginnings working with bicycles they brought us air travel. FIRST robots are cool but the most efficient transportation vehicle has a lot to offer.

Lifelong Impact
When I was a kid I took my bike apart several times, rebuilt and modified it. That experience empowered me. I learned mechanics and how things work. From that seed grows a lifetime of do-it-yourself exploration. Cycling gave me freedom to travel and continues to keep me fit.
Kids are our future and the bicycle club project offers freedom, knowledge and power to change their world. More kids on bikes could bring more parents out to ride. This could reverse the trend of childhood and adult obesity. The next generation of cyclists can improve our future. And it's a whole lot of fun!
Safe Infrastructure
We need more safe infrastructure in Concord so would-be cyclists and kids can participate. Let's ask our Mayor and Council to declare "The car is no longer king in Concord!"
