First winter snowfall - Slipping and Gliding - More Cycling Fun!

Finally a snowfall worthy of the snow blower. After clearing the walks and driveway I headed downtown on the bike. Yes it's a bit sloppy but just like skiing is sliding on snow - biking involves a bit of sliding. It really is kind of fun. Perhaps we can mark streets with green circles when clear and easy while posting blue diamonds and black squares for the more challenging terrain. As long as you relax and go with the slide it works out.

Heading downtown the streets were not yet scraped clean so most all the roadways had degrees of salt laden slush. Riding on snow is similar to driving a car on snow in that you can get in trouble by over correcting a turn. It just takes a little skill to balance while you pilot your way. Think of it as learning new skills and you soon will be traversing the most challenging snowpack.

Returning from downtown the roads were much more clear and water filled. The interesting thing about the trip is that it sure beats walking around Concord right now. Most sidewalks are snow covered and so people walking are often choosing to walk in the street with the cars. The bike is a much more efficient way than walking and my feet were out of the slush.

As mentioned in my December Cycling  post - the major downside is the crud on the bike. I brushed off what I could and used compressed air to blow off more. The bike is going to need a shower next warm day but so do the cars in this weather. I am glad I rode Today and look forward to the next adventure. Join me out there and show off your can do spirit.

One final thought. The next time you fill up your gas tank think about where you're shopping for that fuel. What implications does that have? The product we buy is the fuel and so most of the money leaves the local economy. Consider what you are supporting as you fill up. Is that where you want to spend your hard earned cash? Could any of your trips be swapped out for alternatives modes of transportation? What would buying local really be like if you went to the gas station half as often?

Cycling fuel is groceries and you're going to eat anyway. If you try it you may even like it. We need safe infrastructure it is clear so this can be a choice for more people. Join me in working for that.
