Bicycle Day

It is June 28th,  let's celebrate!

Numbers come in many shapes and sizes. Many are useful for counting while others provide insights into natural sciences. Some of my favorites are  e and i. While Planks Constant and Avogadro's Number are useful in physics and chemistry. Perhaps the ratio of circumference to diameter provides the most pleasure on bicycles. So let us celebrate.

The freedom provided by circles of wheels, axles, pedals, gears and chain bolted to a frame are limitless. There are other conceived days to celebrate but I have a proposal.

Back in March we had pi day on March 14th. There is World Bicycle Day declared by the UN General Assembly in 2018 and celebrated on June 3rd but it seems arbitrary. There is also the weird day celebrated in April which you'll find if you search online.

Given the importance of the bicycle let us celebrate this day, June 28, 2020 as the first Bicycle Day inspired by geometry. Figure out the math as you consider a pair of circles as primary movers.

Each day a bicycle can provide freedom, health and well being on two (or more) wheeled transportation.

Join me in recognizing 6.28.2020 as the first of many annual Bicycle Day celebrations.

2π = 6.28

Happy Bicycle Day!
