What can happen when people begin to experience transportation beyond the automobile and then imagine possibility.
Having grown up in the Twin Cities my childhood included playing in the
street beneath the elm tree canopy of shade. As I look back to that
time, it seems idyllic now.
There was a day when I was old enough to run across the street, but careless enough to do so in the pathway of a car. Yup! I was hit by that car. I was perhaps 7 years old.
Minneapolis is now imagining recreating a street to be a car free boulevard for PEOPLE! Take a look at one concept (below) and begin to imagine what could be! My mind is abuzz, imagining what part of Concord, NH could thrive with such a thoughtful 21st century idea.
Where I grew up we had alleys which could provide every home access to their garage, so this concept is less disruptive to household car usage. The thousand pound behemoths are just relegated to the alley instead of the street in this concept. Imagine the impact on property values and increased social capital and liveability!

North Minneapolis Greenway Planning:
This image shows a street converted into a full greenway, with a trail in the center and no motorized traffic. Image developed by Community Design Group, funded by Bike Walk Twin Cities/ Transit for Livable Communities, and provided courtesy of Twin Cities Greenways.
The City of Minneapolis is developing plans for a north Minneapolis greenway that would provide a safe, accessible route for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Project Description:
The City of Minneapolis is exploring converting low-traffic streets to a greenway in north Minneapolis. A "greenway" is a park-like trail that people can use for biking and walking transportation and recreation. The greenway is intended to create a new health, transportation and recreation amenity for families in north Minneapolis. It could also create space for additional amenities, such as community gardens and public art. Learn more about the proposed greenway route and designs.
